Norway´s National Parks are regulated by the laws of nature. Nature decides both how and when to do things. National Parks are established in order to protect large natural areas - from the coast to the mountains. This is done for our sake, for generations to come and for the benefit of nature itself.

SKARVAN and ROLTDALEN NATIONAL PARK

Counties: Nord Trøndelag, Sør Trøndelag

Established: 2004

Size: 441,4 km2

Pristine mountain and forest

Skarvan and Roltdalen National Park represents a virtually untouched area of mountain and forest, typical for the region. It is one of the largest areas in Trøndelag that is not affected by major infrastructure development, and contains several interesting cultural monuments, especially connected to millstone production.

Well connected

Trondheims Tourist Association began using the area in the 1920s. A network of marked trails connects Roltdalen to the trail network of Nord-Trøndelag Tourist Association and the trails in the Sylan area. Schultzhytta, the only staffed tourist cabin in the area, has a central position in the National Park. The area is much used for hunting and fishing, due to large populations of small game and good fishing in the lakes. You can also participate in organised riding trips in the area. Skiing is popular around the Easter holidays.

A large, roadless, mountain valley

Roltdalen is a large mountain valley, going east-west, dominated by spruce forest. Mountain ranges reaching a 1000 meters protect the valley. The north is dominated by the Skarvan massif, peaking at 1.171 metres. In the south/southeast, the massif stretches from Ruten to Fongen, at 1.441 metres.

Valuable woodlands

Roltdalen is the largest roadless mountain valley in S¿r-Tr¿ndelag. The forest bears traces of former use, although some areas are primeval in appearance, with large, more than 200 year old trees.

The forest in Roltdalen valley iself is the most valuable in a botanical context. However, the climatic conditions have resulted in an increase in wetlands in the area, and the bogs and mires have rich vegetation. The area contains 20 species that are on the National Red List of threatened species.

Varios cultural momuments

The National Park contains a great variety of cultural monuments. They bear witness of a long and diverse exploitation of the area by different ethnic grups. You´ll find remains of farms, mining facilities, Sami settlements, pit-falls and sites connected to copper mining, millstone production, mountain farming and old travel routes.

Kvernfjellet mountain in Selbu is the largest millstone production area in Norway. The production started in medieval times and continued up to WWI. Millstones from the area were shipped to all parts of the country, and also abroad. Kvernfjellet, Gruvfjellet and the mountain farms highlight the importance of the area for the Selbu village from the 1500s and to this day. Gruvfjellet is a monument over the copper mining in Roltdalen. The mine was in operation from 1713 to 1761. There´s also an old mine near Litlklepptjønna lake in Meråker Municipality.

The mountain farms thoughout Roltdalen shows extensive use of all the resources of the area. The farmers of old were dependent on this for survival. They cut the forest, used the moors for grazing and cut the grass for winter fodder. In the years 1930 to 1947 many hundred cattle, goats and sheep were in the pastures of Roltdalen. Today, parts of the area are still used as summer grazing areas for sheep.

Roltdalen is very interesting with regards to Sami cultural monuments. The Sami of Tydal were originally divided into 3 groups, today they all belong to the Essand reindeer district. The most common cultural sites are old settlements and gathering areas for reindeer. Today the area is used as grazing grounds for reindeer from april until late fall.
