nce node

NCE NODE (Norwegian Offshore & Drilling Engineering) is a business cluster of over 50 companies within the oil and gas industry in southern Norway. The offshore industry in southern Norway represents a strongly industrial environment. A high level of intercompany competition, interaction with demanding oil and gas clients as well as strict governmental requirements have resulted in the fact that several of the companies have gained a unique market position in each of their segments. The NODE companies deliver everything from complete platform solutions to high-technology equipment for use on platforms and ships. Their client list includes both national and international rig owners as well as oil and shipping companies.

NCE stands for Norwegian Centres of Expertise, a company-oriented developmental program directed by Innovation Norway, SIVA and the Norwegian Research Council. Being selected as an NCE creates opportunities and requires commitment. In order to be awarded NCE status, an organization must meet a certain set of criteria. It must for instance be related to an expert cluster on a world-class level, have an international orientation and demonstrate great potential for innovation and growth in the relevant cluster.

There has been great growth in the demand for advanced, heavy duty drill equipment, loading, unloading and anchoring materials, as well as heave compensating cranes for use on ships and floating rigs. The biggest companies in the NODE cluster are world-leading with significant global market shares in the following niches:

Drilling

Aker Solutions (MH) and National Oilwell Varco Norway have, over many years, developed from being drill equipment suppliers to being complete system suppliers in drilling. TTS-Sense has grown significantly and is the third company in this niche. AS NYMO designs, builds and transports complete drill rigs. The companies can handle the entire drilling process, including mud handling and material controls. Advanced skills in ICT process information from the well to optimise the drilling process. Drilling equipment has developed from simple machines to automated systems. Pictures from the drill bit are analysed and the results determine how the drilling will be done.

Loading/unloading and anchoring equipment

National Oilwell Varco (formerly APL) and Aker Solutions (Pusnes) in Arendal both supply complete systems for loading and unloading hydrocarbons. The systems transfer oil and gas from the seabed to a buoy, ship or platform. The advanced equipment fulfils the requirements for zero emissions. Additionally, the companies supply advanced anchoring systems between the seabed and the platform or ship, ensuring stable positioning during harsh weather conditions.

Active heave cranes

National Oilwell Varco Norway and Cargotec (formerly Hydramarine) are now the two main suppliers of advanced cranes that hold heavy loads steady in relation to the seabed, whilst the crane/vessel is moving on the surface. They have both developed solutions that can perform lifting operations at depths greater than 3,000 metres.

Complete platform solutions

Sevan Marine builds, owns and operates floating production solutions for oil and gas (FPSO). The company has developed a cylinder-shaped floating rig for tough seas and weather conditions, conforming to strict environmental requirements.
