Øksfjord is the administrative centre of the municipality. It is located at the mouth of the Øksfjorden on the mainland. The area also has several glaciers. The Øksfjordjøkel glacier is the largest and perhaps the most challenging. The smaller one is Langfjordjøkel.

Northern Light

From Øksfjord, you cross the fjord by ferry followed by a 20 minute drive to the village of Nuvsvåg. Nuvsvåg is a fishing village is on the mainland but relies on a ferry crossing (10 minutes) to reach the municipal centre of Øksfjord.

The Northern Lights are only visible when the sky is dark and clear, from August to April, and they are most intense from 10 pm to midnight.

The midnight sun casts a wonderful light over the Loppa seas and the weather can change rapidly from sun to rain, fog to storms.
