bernt bodal

Bernt Bodal grew up outside Oslo, where his father was a tram conductor. We weren´t poor but we certainly weren´t well. We didn´t have a car until I was 10. We couldn´t afford a television. Bernt Bodal became a professional musician for five years in the band Høst.

So how did a Norwegian rocker played with Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam and Roger Daltrey of The Who and Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, wind up as a CEO?

Bernt Bodal´s mother and stepfather moved to Seattle. They had connections in the fishing business. Bodal wanted to try something new, so he worked as a deckhand on a fishing boat and became a U.S. citizen. Bodal became captain after a year, and spent 13 years fishing in Alaska, and became part owner of a trawler. Bodal joined American Seafoods in 1990 as a minority partner and became president of the company in 1994.

American Seafoods Company was created in 1987 by Kjell Inge Røkke, a Norwegian fisherman who had quit school at 16 to go to sea. In 1998 the American Fisheries Act (AFA) passed, requiring that certain fishing companies, including those engaged in the Alaska pollock and cod fisheries, be American-owned. This caused American Seafoods Company to scramble for American owners. American Seafoods Group have a business jet and Bodal always captain. Bodal fly around the world because we operate in Southeast Asia, China and Europe.

If you think you know everything about the fishing industry from watching "Deadliest Catch," Bodal points out that there are vast differences. His fishing boats carry around 130 workers, many taking 12-hour shifts.
